Today is my 2 year anniversary in Namibia! 2 years ago today I arrived and started working as a vet. I’ve loved every single minute of it! I’m happy that I could make a difference for so many animals, and I hope I can make a difference for many more in the years to come! But I’m also thankful for the new friends I made, and my friends from Belgium who came over and visited me and this beautiful country! #reflection#anniversary#namibia#wildlifevet
The heartbreaking reality of poaching...
An adult female was shot down for the keratin horn on her face, but that night the poachers took 2 lives, as she carried in her womb another life that never got a chance to see the world, to take a breath, to feel the grass under its feet...
Please don’t report this image- the world needs to see the brutal reality of the destruction of our world, and take action to protect it.
All images by @benswildlife, to whom we are so grateful for sharing this heartbreaking scene...

VET VISIT FOR SHAE
Sound on to hear our Director of Operations, @arcticcrystals
Our beautiful rescue, Shae, is part of our #Westeros Pack. This family of wolf-dogs had a horrific few years before we rescued them. Life with us has been better than they could have dreamed, including a visit by #gameofthrones author, #georgerrmartin . His wife, Parris, is their #packmama and named them after characters from #asongoficeandfire . But, alas, they still have some drama.
Shae is on her way to the vet today to have her injured eye removed. We have seen this type of injury before in another Westeros Pack member, Summer. We are almost positive it is result of normal discipline going a bit too far. Sadly, Shaggydog's inhibited bite is not so inhibited.
At last and after hormonal stimulation with GnRH in a right time for male Persian leopard (Gaspar), natural mating happened and we are really hopefull to see Kija’s (female Persian leopard) cub after 3 months.🤞 @tehranzoo
Captive breeding of endangered species for conaervation is one of the main goals of the zoos.

So following up from my last post on tracking collars--> this collar uses both VHF and LoRa geolocation.
The white box there is the LoRa component. While VHF (see previous post) can be used to physically locate and get eyes on the animal, the LoRa network can tell you remotely where the animal is. It's comparable to a cellular network. Your phone uses a cell tower to send/receive info. The LoRa device communicates with a locally based tower called a gateway, which is the link between the device and the server. The gateway receives data from the collar via LoRa. The server communicates with the gateway via the Internet. .
LoRa is restricted to low bandwidth, and the tradeoff to this is a very long range and battery life. .
Meet Boston! Boston is a juvenile olive ridley turtle rescued by como cocoa island. He was found by guests who were out kayaking. He was entangled in a ghost net and has wounds to his neck and 3 flippers. Luckily he doesn't need an amputation and we have surgically repaired all 3 flippers today. He is currently waking up from anaesthetic.
He weighs just 4.25kg!
