I‘m doing a straddle fold which is one of my go-to hip openers. You can always bend your knees in this one and place pillows underneath. I usually love to prop myself up and give my muscles enough time to ease into the stretch.
When I was new to yoga I used to read like this for about 15 minutes before going to bed and just now I‘m thinking I want to pick that habit back up again 🤓📚. Anybody down to join me? We could be a ‚books & stretches club‘ 😎...
Anyways - hip openers are awesome because: 👌🏼 open hips = more range of movement, better circulation, and more support for the muscles of the back and the spine.
👌🏼 they help with better alignment.
👌🏼 they reduce stress and anxiety – one of the main benefits of hip openers is stretching and strengthening muscles that are directly connected to our stress response.
👌🏼 in yogic tradition it is believed that our hips store emotions and memories, which we are resisting/pushing back. Practicing hip openers creates a physical space in the body that manifests into openness when meeting new challenges, opportunities and ideas. .

I used to see people post about this and think it was stupid. However, I’ve been writing down my goals and dreams every single night, and I’m honestly floored how many have come to life in 3 weeks. Last nights double PiYo workout kicked my ass and had me sweating bullets! First 20 minutes was upper body, not so bad I was a little tired but I was ready for more. Moved on to sweat, they do not call it Sweat for nothing.
I'm going to let you in on something about last nights workout. Im almost ashamed at my thoughts here. I was exhausted and my legs were shaking and I was dripping some sweat. The last 10 mins I was telling myself, "You've already done Upper Body and more than half of Sweat' you can call it quits, it will be fine and no one would know."
I would know. I would know I didnt push through those last 10 mins. And what kind of image would that send? I couldn't do that to myself. I pushed through and I'm telling you right now, it was the hardest moments of the week. But I did it. I am so proud of myself! If I can do it so can you! Dont ever give up on yourself.

Starting journaling seemed so intimidating to me. It was like sitting down for a free write in English class and I’m sitting here staring at the blank page, “What do I write... what’s on my mind... I don’t know”. Then it finally clicked one day as I was typing a reminder into my phone. Why didn’t I do this with my journaling? If I always have paper around I can jot everything down as it comes to me and either revisit it later or just add it in with the pages. Journaling doesn’t have to be in one format, it’s what works for you.
I just wanted to follow up a little on my last post after a dear friend reached out to me saying she also had been struggling with avoidance.
She thought maybe journaling could help her but like so many of us felt that it would cut time out of other commitments.

I went back and watched some of my videos from the past few months, and I came to the conclusion that I’m a bit stuck in a rut, practice wise. The same poses, transitions, etc were all present.
Not that it’s necessarily a bad thing, I’ve gotten great at sugarcane to pistol squat, and extended side plank, extended camel!
But I’ve noticed it in my teaching as well, always coming back to the same things.
I like keeping my practice interesting and fresh, and challenging my body with new poses and movements.
How do you keep your practice fresh? Or your teaching? Are there any classes on @alo.moves you would recommend?
