  • 🔺🔻🔺 making this shape was really interesting & weird. it required all 3 of us to simultaneously surrender in a backwards lean while reaching forward to firmly clutch each other in support. 2 opposing actions that needed to happen in total equilibrium, or you risk taking yourself & everyone out.

there’s a good life analogy here somewhere about balance or trust or finding beauty in contradiction...but it’s friday & show of hands if your brain is fried. 🙋‍♀️

  • Day 5, the final day of this thoughtful challenge hosted by @yogaquota and @accessibleyoga ! The last question for pondering is: “LANGUAGE: does the language you use while teaching promote inclusion? Can you use language more sensitive to the people in the room? Think about language of inquiry or invitatory language.”

(1) GENDER NEUTRAL TERMS! 👤 I grew up on the east coast where “guys” was the neutral term, even in a household run by women. While I still use it, (“gals” feels like I’m in a 1950’s strip club 🤢), I’ve started using the words “folks,” “friends,” or “everyone/body,” both in my classes and as a server when speaking to my guests at the restaurant. I’ve actually been called out for using the word “gentlemen,” and it was HUGE eye opener. Since then, I’ve made it a point to think before I greet. I think the important thing to remember here is that using neutral terms is about RESPECT and COMPASSION, not about some unjustified “agenda” that’s asking you to change your entire belief system.

(2) BODILY TERMS! 💪🏼 I used the word, “booty” in class the other day and I immediately felt strange about it. Perhaps it was just me, perhaps I was feeling it from my students. Regardless, I’ve chosen to use that word VERY carefully from now on, if at all, as I felt it could be triggering. *Know that the way you refer to someone’s body, whether it is your intention or not, affects the way that person feel about their body. That said, I try to use a mix of general terms (“squeeze your legs,”), and anatomically correct terms (“squeeze your quadriceps and hamstrings,”), when instructing.

(3) SOMATIC SPEAKING! 🗣 I took an incredible workshop a few months back about Somatic speaking, and how when used correctly, helps the practitioner develop a more intimate connection with their body and feel more present in the moment. Sounds like Yoga to me! In short, somatic speaking involves using language that encourages inquiry around the body and sensations, as a way of bringing the practitioner into the present moment so that they may begin to understand themselves and even release old holding patterns by way of feeling.

  • So I’m usually up at 5 am most mornings, sometimes 7 and that ’s ‘late’ for me. It happens naturally and I am able to get some time to myself to start of the day right. This past week though I’ve been struggling to wake up in the mornings. It’s mixture of feeling slightly off, this winter weather, and just being lethargic in general.  When I wake up later I don’t usually have time to go through my morning routine, which is very important for me in term of dealing with my anxiety. The last few days I’ve felt like I was wasting  time or trying to play catch up the whole day. It’s a mixture of feeling like I’m putting too much pressure on myself and also not wanting to be too easy on myself. It’s hard finding that balance. I don’t quite have it yet. But I’m looking and trying. Reminding myself when I need to slow down and when I need to push forward.

It’s about 9 in the evening, I’m after a long day at work and with the girls, who I just put to sleep, I’m so tired but I’m determined to practice from a number of reasons: I enjoy it, it relaxes me, and I want to stand on my head so badly!!
Some people won’t understand it, what is so exciting about standing on your head when you’re a grown woman, married and mommy of 3. But I can imagine that some of you totally understand me 😉. It took me about 3 month to separate from the wall and learn how to fall the right way (like I showed on my of my latest post). Today standing on my head sometimes feels better than standing on my legs 🤘🏼🙃. BTW- a lot of you have asked me about my warm up flow after yesterday’s post, well, you can find a few examples on my IGTV.
Enjoy the rest of you weekend 😘😘."
