  • Cities may be the key to saving tigers, says a new study led by @TheWCS. Over the last century-plus, these big cats have seen their population plummet from over 100,000 to between 3,000 and 4,000. At the same time, Asia's human population has risen from 790 million to some 4 billion-plus. But these trends are changing and cities are at the center of it. "Urbanization and the subsequent human demographic transition is arguably the most important historical trend shaping the future of conservation," said WCS's Eric Sanderson. "How that transition plays out is not pre-determined." Check out what the scientists think should be done, via the link in our bio.

  • This blurry photo shows a remarkable rescue in Uganda. On January 1, three male lions strayed from Queen Elizabeth National Park into a neighboring village—a dangerous situation for both the animals and the local people. Early last year, 11 lions were killed near a fishing village in the area. Because these new lions had been fitted with satellite trackers, though, @wcsuganda, the Uganda Wildlife Authority, and the Uganda Carnivore Program received real-time location information on their smartphones about the animals' movements. They were able to track down the lions before a conflict occurred. After veterinarians tranquilized the animals, the lions were taken to safe spot and released. Full story via link in our bio.
